Carthage Hosts Special Event

Athletes, Alcohol and Steroids

Marcus Ellis of the Eighth District Drug Court spoke to all athletes at Carthage Junior High School Thursday, February 19, 2009 on how drugs affect your body. All parents were encouraged to attend the event. The program was sponsored by the Coalition for a Drug Free Leake County.

Capitol Hill Day- participants get a chance to make their voices hear in Congress and to hear from key lawmakers who have been longtime supporters of our cause.

MCP Staff and Coalition Member of a Drug Free Leake County were there to voice the drug and alcohol issues they face in their communities.

The coalition consists of key community stakeholders within the targeted areas we serve such as:

Youth
Parents
Business Community
Media
Schools: Public, Private and Parochial
Youth-serving Organizations
Institutions of Higher Learning
Law Enforcement Agencies
Religious or Fraternal Organizations
Civic and Volunteer Groups
Health Care Professionals
State, local or tribal government agencies with expertise in the fielf of substance abuse
Other organizations involved in reducing substance abuse

Elected officals and important community stakeholders, such as the mayor, judges, and high visibility community activities, should be represented on this list. The representatives of each group should be individuals of some stature within the group of individuals who have access to the group's leaders and resources. Diversity is also important. If an important segment of the commuity is left out of the process of identitfying the problem, it is unlikely that they will accept or participate in the solutions.

DRUG FREE WEEK in Carthage, MS

Judge Carolyn Thomas, A member of the Coalition for A Drug Free Leake County spoke to South Leake High School in Carthage, MS on October 29, 2008. The speaking engagement was in honor of Red Ribbon Week. The Drug Awarness program for that day was titled..."Making Choices".

Judge Carolyn Wilcher Thomas has served 17 years as our Justice Court Judge in the Eastern District. She has over 500 hours of judicial schooling with the University of Mississippi Law. She has attended the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada for extra classes. She attends extra classes three times a year, along with two mandatory classes each year with the Mississippi Judicial College. She is serving her third term as an Executive Board Member of the Mississippi Justice Court Judges Association. Judge Thomas is also a member of the Coalition for a Drug-Free Leake County.

Poster Contest:

MCP Poster contest was created to help inform youth about consequences associated with the use of alcohol, tabacco and other drugs. Participants are to use the theme provided to form a collage. The contest is open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders.

The theme for the 2008 Drug Awarenness Poster contest is "I SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE". Participants must create the collages themselves, but they may get assistance from teachers, parents and friends.

Winners will be announced during Red Ribbon Week and will receive a certificate, pizza party and a $100.00 savings bond. Please return all posters of Mrs. Jackie Ward by October 17, 2008. Contact Mrs. Ward for any questions or concerns at 601.654.9234.

MCP, INC. AND MAYOR SIMS TO HOLD PROCLAMATION SIGNING

An estimated 22.6 million people in the United States suffer from substance use disorders, and every year 4 million people nationally are able to receive the treatment they need. To celebrate individuals in long term recovery and their families, as well as the treatment providers that serve our communities, Mississippi Community Partnership is hosting a celebration for the signing of the National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month Proclamation by Walnut Grove’s Mayor, Grady Sims. His signature will proclaim the month of September National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, encouraging the residents of Walnut Grove, MS to participate. Kicking off the celebration is guest speaker Marcus Ellis who serves as the 8th Judicial Drug Court Coordinator.

The celebration is a part of the 19th annual observance of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month and will address this year’s theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery.” Recovery Month is a nationwide celebration of people in long term recovery from substance use disorders who have a renewed outlook on life and the treatment providers who help them reclaim their lives.

Abstinence Education Crucial to Youth Development

Mississippi Community Partnership, Inc. (MCP) recently conducted an abstinence education program, Choosing the Best, for youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Mississippi. The primary objectives of this program are to help 12-18 year-old students living in the Metro Jackson area to abstain from sexual activities until marriage and to maintain a healthy, monogamous marriage as adults. MCP is a community-based nonprofit coalition which provides technical assistance to faith-based and community-based organizations and schools within the state of Mississippi. MCP also provides substance abuse prevention training and cultural competency guidance.

Nedra Redd, Director of Program Development, believes the abstinence program complements BGCCM's overall youth development strategy.

"We teach our kids how to make smart decisions and how to stay healthy. Abstinence education is every bit as important as the alcohol and drug prevention programs we have. We're thankful to have partners like Mississippi Community Partnership to reinforce our message to youth," said Redd.
MCP's Holly Palmer says the kids at the clubs were very receptive to the abstinence lessons.

"Teaching in the Boys and Girls Clubs this summer was an experience that I will never forget. It was nice to see so many bright, young kids so eager to learn. I hope each student will take what was discussed throughout the abstinence program and apply it to their own lives. It was extremely fun and I am anxious to be a part of it again," said Palmer.

Something to Think About. . .

Sometimes a small decision can have a great impact. We see it every day at our 6 Jackson-area Boys & Girls Clubs. For instance, recently one of our teen members decided at the last minute to stay home instead of coming to the club. Later that day, he simply walked onto his front porch and became a victim of stray bullet from gunfire. He had no relationship with the shooter. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Most our members come from disadvantaged circumstances and many live in neighborhoods that can be very dangerous. However, at our clubs, the kids are safe. The clubs are a haven, where kids can take part in programs that will enable them to succeed in life, instead of being lured down the wrong path. When kids are at a Boys & Girls Club, they are at the right place at the right time.

Who We Are

Mississippi Community Partnership, Inc. is a not-for-profit 501©3 organization with over 40 years of combined experience in providing substance abuse prevention training and implementation, cultural competency guidance, grant writing, financial management, coalition design and non-profit management and development. Moreover, this wealth of experience from the grassroots formula to present enables the incorporation of bridging theorem to practice in the communities we seek to empower. MCP, Inc. is committed to providing subtenant community service that results in strong family bonds, safe communities, and effective environmental strategies.

Consequently, Mississippi Community Partnership, Inc. was founded to provide direction to the 12 key community state-holders who are passionate about altering the blueprints of our youths and communities through the implementation of substance use prevention programs, mentoring programs, HIV/AIDS prevention and community development services for at-risk youth and families throughout the State of Mississippi. Our goal is to provide services through collaboration and partnering with diverse community organizations via technical assistance, direct and indirect assistance to form a cooperative spirit. Thus, these neighboring cooperative agreements can effectively bring about community changes that are instrumental in making a meaningful and significant impact throughout the State of Mississippi by following our motto– “Encompassing Communities Through Empowerment”.

Mississippi Community Partnership has developed a plan that is community focused not simply targeted on preparing and assisting individuals. Our community coalition focuses on changing the full environment by identifying and implementing strategies that will affect community attitudes, perception, norms, and beliefs around alcohol and other drugs. The Coalition members’ role in the planning and development of prevention programs are identified and based on the community needs assessment which identifies risks and protective factors from many data sources and with input from community stakeholders. The Coalition members’ prevention approaches include a comprehensive approach, serving youths and parents, as well as impacting prevention efforts at as larger environmental and public policy approach, through the implementation of prevention planning, guidance documents, public awareness campaigns, merchant education and training, and general dissemination of information about serving the needs of the community through effective proven strategies.
